Adelaide, capital of South Australia, is a charming well planned city with a reputation as a centre for arts, churches, culture and fine dining. Its bustling Central Markets, Rundle Mall's shops and restaurants in Rundle Street are major draw cards. Take a cruise on the River Torrens followed by a walk across the river to North Adelaide. Alternatively, take a tram ride from the City centre to the popular beachside suburb of Glenelg.

This State offers a number of historic townships in the Adelaide Hills, beautiful sandy beaches in the south, fertile wine regions (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Riverland, and Coonawarra) and harsh deserts heading north to central Australia including the opal mining town of Coober Pedy and the scenery of Flinders Ranges. Rugged coasts, lush pastures, pine forests, lakes and extinct volcanoes can be found in the south east. A boat ride down the Murray River may also appeal. Kangaroo Island and Victor Harbor are also popular tourist destinations South of Adelaide.

In 1802 British explorer Matthew Flinders maps the entire South Australian coast in his ship, the Investigator, after a surprise meeting with French navigator Nicolas Baudin. Despite their respective countries being at war, the two swapped notes just off the Fleurieu Peninsula coast. In 1836 the first South Australian settlers land at Kangaroo Island. Surveyor-General Colonel William Light begins his survey of Adelaide and Governor John Hindmarsh arrives on the Buffalo.
